The energy consumption habits, and investments into energy efficiecy and renewables of the population of the XVIII. district of BudapestUploaded: 1 of July, 2014

In May 2014 the local government of the XVIII. district commissioned in the framework of RE-SEEties project, a survey based study form REKK (Regional Centre for Energy Policy Research). The survey focused on the energy consumption habits, and investments into energy efficiecy and renewables of the population of the XVIII. district of Budapest. Future investment plans and some questions on transportation use were also asked. The questionnaire used for the survey is available in Hungarian and in English, the analytical study is available only in Hungarian.

A few results of the survey:

  • Most of the population of the XVIII. district lives in their own property, and 72% of them finance the housing modernization and energy efficiency investments with own resources.
  • 40% of the people who live in block of flats are beyond a major renewal. (typically majority co-financed by EU, government and local community souces). Those, who haven’t been through a modernization, are not even planning it, primarily due to financial reasons.
  • Condominiums with less than 4 flats are quite new, thus not need to be renewed for the time being.
  • The rather limited number of renewable energy heating equipment is found, and they are all located in the family house area. Only one house is using renewable heating as a primary heating source. The willingness to invest in renewable energy production is also low. The current end user price control decisions (politically driven utility price cut) of the government has calmed the investment willingness by reducing the return on inverstments.
  • The most common renewable energy source is firewood. Nearly 10% of the households use it as primary or secondary fuel (always next to natural gas), and regarding to the answers given for the question about purchase cost it turns out, that typically outdoor waste wood is fired.
  • In the XVIII. district, 30% of the households, 18% of the population use bicycle on a daily basis.
