Analysing the causes of the Hungarian wholesale electricity spike in January 201729 of March, 2017 - REKK Market Monitoring Club Budapest

A significant spike of wholesale electricity prices was registered in January 2017, when day-ahead HUPX prices were above 100 €/MWh and even reached 200 €/MWh in some hours. What might have been the main reasons of this phenomenon? Were these factors present only in Hungary or overall in the region? What role does the intraday market play in such a volatile time? Do these price spikes mean a lack of capacity in Hungary or in the region? We are seeking answers to these questions in the next REKK Market Monitoring Club.
