REKK Energy Storage Day - The latest developments in energy storage: challenges related to network and market integration4 of April, 2018 - REKK Energy Futures III.
Location: Budapest Music Center, 1093 Budapest Mátyás utca 8.

At the third event of our series covering “energy transition”, we discussed the developments of grid-connected energy storage. As power production from weather-dependent sources and household-sized small power plants pick up, there is an increased need for flexible energy storage solutions on the domestic and regional markets as well.

Because of the relatively high price of reserve energy to deal with system imbalances, more and more attention is given to the competition between production capacities and batteries with ever decreasing unit costs. Beside commercial activities, batteries may gain a significant role in the operation of power systems as well. The building of new network infrastructure – which is made difficult by increasing public resistance – may be postponed or substituted by using batteries to prevent the temporary overcharge of network elements (cables, transformer stations).

To use this technology for new purposes, and to make it fit into the supply chain, an appropriate regulatory environment is necessary – beside domestic initiatives for its application, this issue was also be discussed at the III. event of the REKK Energy Futures series. All three big domestic energy storage projects, those of E.ON, ELMŰ and Alteo, were presented during the workshop. The presenters joined by Gábor Erdei (ABB) and Zoltán Lontay (energy expert) for a panel discussion was moderated by Gábor Szörényi, they were focusing on the lessons of foreign examples concerning the necessary regulatory approach to help the further spread of these solutions.

Besides the Hungarian project leaders, Jan Namyslo from Fluence Energy also joined the event as keynote speaker. Fluence Energy has been launched by AES and Siemes to enhance their storage activities together.
