Knowledge-sharing in the field of long duration energy storageUploaded: 25 of March, 2025

With the acceleration of energy transition, the role of long duration energy storage (LDES) is growing. Technologies such as liquid or compressed air storage, flow batteries or gravity energy storage can store excess energy produced by variable renewables for longer periods of time, even across seasons, increasing energy security and independence. The UK is at the forefront of LDES innovation and is already piloting these technologies.

The aim of the project, supported by the British Embassy in Budapest, was to provide a targeted exchange of experience on long-term energy storage between UK and Hungarian stakeholders. We explored the latest and most promising LDES pilot projects in the UK and held an online webinar to present them and discuss support policy and regulatory issues. Following the workshop, we summarised our findings in a policy brief.
